Peter was born in New Glasgow, and was raised in the rural community of Lorne. He grew up on a family farm that was originally settled by his great, great grandfather, and is occupied by his father Elmer today.
After receiving an arts degree at Acadia University in 1987, and a law degree from Dalhousie University, Peter returned to New Glasgow where he still makes his home.
With strong family ties to the local area, Peter’s resume includes opening a private law practice which specialized in criminal and family law. In 1993, he accepted an appointment as the Crown Attorney for the Central region of Nova Scotia where he prosecuted cases at all levels, including youth and provincial courts as well as the Supreme Court of Canada.
Knowing that he wanted to do more to serve his community, Peter first ran for public office in 1997 with great success. It was that year that he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Pictou-Antigonish-Guysborough; what is now known as Central Nova. He was re-elected in 2000, 2004 and 2006.

Anyone who has ever worked with, or for Peter over the past few years has often heard him say that he is first and foremost the MP for Central Nova. An advocate for our end of the province, he has never past up the chance to bring a colleague to our area to sample the local hospitality.
While keeping his responsibilities at home a top priority, Peter has also served his county in many important capacities.
Peter was appointed Minister of National Defence on August 14, 2007 by Canada’s 22nd Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper. Prior to this appointment, Peter served as Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has also served as Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and, Minister responsible for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
He received the prestigious Queen's Counsel designation in 2006. This designation recognizes the accomplishments and leadership of exemplary legal professionals as well as their personal contributions to their communities.
Here at home, Peter has served on numerous volunteer boards in Pictou County. He is a member of the Pictou County Senior Rugby Club, YMCA, and enjoys baseball, hockey and football as well as painting and drawing.
